Tape Recovery Service Overview

Tapes are very different to disc recordings (obviously!). Tape recordings require much more delicate handling to get the most off them, and they are also far, far more fragile and easily affected by moisture, dust, and of course magnetic fields!

Over the years we have collected and continue to maintain an great collection of tape players to ensure the best possible reproduction, repair, and recovery of all types of magnetic tape recordings.

We also provide tape repair (splicing) services for a nominal fee (usually $25.00 per broken tape). These repairs apply to all types of tapes, compact cassette, reel, or microcassette. We can repackage most standard cassettes, and we're happy to respool and repack reel tapes and other tape media.

There is a "but"... Because of the nature of older tapes, it's absolutely impossible to provide any kind of guarantee or warranty for physically repaired tapes. End of story. We would rather transfer the tape contents to a new tape of the same or better quality, and we can do that for a fixed fee of $35.00 per tape, plus shipping and handling.

Because of the fragility of tape media, we see much worse damage than with LPs of the same age, and playing a very old tape can be a nerve-wracking experience! In some cases, playing the tape may be impossible due to tape backing deterioration. So rest assured that we go to extreme lengths to care for all tapes we handle, and if we can't help, we'll tell you so, and we won't charge a penny, either.

What kinds of tape recordings can Audiography convert?

To be honest, it would be simpler if we listed what we couldn't repair and convert to CD! But we have to start somewhere... so, here's a brief list of tapes we can recover:

  • All standard cassettes (C-45, C-60, C-90, and C-120)
  • ¼" reel-to-reel tapes (9½ and 19 IPS, and just about anything faster or slower - from 0.25 IPS to 48 IPS!)
  • Dictaphone tapes (mini- and micro-cassette)
  • Wire recordings (under very specific circumstances).

We can also convert:

  • Sound recordings from VHS and NTSC video tapes, and DVDs
  • Solid-state cards (camera cards, MP3 flash cards, and so on)
  • Hard disk recordings (see the section on supported formats for more info)
  • Audio-DVD (the new DVD formats)

In fact, we can recover, clean, process, and save sound from just about anything you give us! For more information on the kinds of recordings you may have that we don't have the equipment for, please refer to the page on supported equipment.
