What We Do:

We copy your video - your wedding, training video, car racing, surveillance tape, your child's first steps, etc., to DVD.

This will mean you can easily access any part of any video with the convenience of a DVD player, without danger of tape tangles or wear and tear (or worse!).

Note: Please see "What We Can Almost Do" below if you have erased tapes. We may not be able to help, but hopefully we can at least point you in the right direction!

What We Can Do!

We can copy, combine, or split videos in SECAM (French and African), NTSC (American and Japanese) and PAL (Australian, UK, and European) formats. We can comfortably handle most extended- or long-play tape formats, although if you do have an unusual format, we may need access to the original recorder to do the recording justice! (Please see our supported equipment description for more assistance.)

We will clean the tape if required, then we'll record the contents to DVD in your preferred format (PAL or NTSC). We are able to edit the recording into appropriate titles, chapters, and so on, if needed.

We offer some fairly basic video editing facilities (unwanted scene removal, trimming start and finish, and some scene relocation) as part of our standard service. Also, the audio content can be repaired and modified in any way to bring it back up to scratch. (Please note, if the audio needs to be radically altered, this service will be an additional service - i.e. not covered by the standard video conversion).

What We Can Almost Do...

Broken Tapes

Right now, although we do repair audio tapes, we are unable to offer repairs to broken or damaged VHS video tapes to the same level as our other technical offerings.

We can and do repair all sorts of physical video tape damage, but because of the technology, we just can't guarantee the repairs. This is especially important when tapes are played in "compact" or "portable" players, which cause enormous stresses on repaired joins. We normally repair the tape well enough to play and capture it on our own video decks, and of course we will return the tape when we return the DVD, but we can't know how the repair will hold up over continued use.

We automatically include the costs of any such repairs in the transfer-to-DVD costs. Otherwise, tape splicing and repacking repairs will be charged at $35.00 per tape, plus postage of course. But we cannot and will not guarantee such a repair.

If you need a VHS or Beta tape repaired for continued use, we would strongly recommend that you contact your local video lender (Blockbuster, Civic Video, etc) and find out who they use to repair tapes locally to you. Unfortunately, with many large retailers, it's cheaper for them to throw tapes away rather than repair them, but if you contact their Australian head office and ask to speak to their service department, you may be able to find someone who understands what your needs are)

If you still can't get satisfaction, please contact us using our feedback form and use "Video Tape Repair" as the category, and we'll get in touch with you to discuss your options.

"Oops! Syndrome"

If someone you know has taped over a personally important video recording (for example, if your "Baby's First Steps" tape now contains the last Australian Idol episode), there's usually not much that can be done. Much depends on the quality of the tape, the length of time the original recording had existed, the type of program that has been recorded, the tape recorder quality, humidity, temperature, tape age, and many other factors.

There are specialist recovery services that may be able to recover some information, but in general you'll find that what (if anything) is recovered is extremely poor quality, and will cost you a small fortune to boot. However, we can often assist in finding an appropriate service provider for you.

Additionally, we would suggest contacting the head offices of Blockbuster, Civic Video, and so on, to see if they may be able to offer some suggestions. Alternatively, you may be better searching for US companies or contacts on the web (if you haven't already done so, of course!). There are companies that do this kind of work in the US, but they tend to not advertise on the world wide web...

If you do find a company that can help you, and you're satisfied with the results (or if you'd like us to investigate their services), please let us know so we can update this page to help other folks who may be in your situation!

In any case, Good Luck!

Other types of physical damage

In partnership with a Melbourne-based physical recording specialist, we can now offer repairs to non-analogue recordings, such as broken hard disk drives, damaged or scratched CDs and DVDs, damaged or broken camera cards (Memory Sticks, SD cards, MMC, and so on) and much more.

These services are amongst the best in the world, so if you DO have serious problems with such recordings, please contact us directly and we'll arrange for examination and quotation.

Cleaning

We do use a sophisticated and extremely reliable real-time hardware to remove most unwanted and annoying video signal degradations, edge tearing, and sync loss. However, for badly damaged or extremely worn tapes, it's just not technically feasible to remove or eliminate severe video distortion without savagely affecting the underlying video. So, for example, bars or lines across the picture that last for the length of the video, or bars that move up and down over the picture, are extremely time-consuming to  edit (if they can be edited at all). If you do have tapes with this kind of damage, please contact us first to discuss options.

We currently don't provide format conversion to copyrighted videos or DVDs, only archival to DVD format. Please don't ask us to copy or duplicate copyrighted material, or material subject to commercial encryption, as refusal often offends.

And we still can't turn lead into gold...
